Resident Earth Day Cleanup with Pitt-Ohio

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Each year, our neighbors at Pitt-Ohio sponsor an Earth Day clean up.  This year, the celebration takes place on Saturday, April 20th.

Residents from The Cork Factory Lofts and Lot 24 are invited to join Pitt-Ohio employees and their families to improve the appearance of our corner of The Strip District. The day begins at 9:30 am—rain or shine—with team assignments and distribution of t-shirts, work gloves and collection bags at the Pitt-Ohio headquarters, 15 27th Street.  Most of the cleanup effort is concentrated along Railroad Street as Pitt-Ohio trucks make rounds to collect trash bags and debris. The project wraps up at noon, when volunteers are provided with lunch, courtesy of Pitt-Ohio.

Organizing resident participation is Jerry of The Cork Factory Lofts. If you would like to participate in this Earth Day community event, drop him a line at pghtvguy@aol.com.

While not as much of a relic as The Cork Factory or Penn Mac, Pitt-Ohio is a Strip District institution. This family-run supply-chain, industrial shipping and truckload organization has been fulfilling the regions and nation’s needs for more than 30 years. Visit their website to learn more about their services and team.

Corkers Around Town: Jerry Hughes

Jerry Hughes_Pittsburgh_Cork Factory_Strip District

The Cork Factory is home to some pretty exceptional people. Professionals, academics and others grace our halls and Engine Room on a daily basis, each contributing in their own special way to the economy and culture of Pittsburgh. Television production professional Jerry Hughes (no, not the Colts’ Defensive End) is an instantly recognizable Corker, always found with his white beard and genuine smile. Jerry’s place in our city has been well documented, most recently in a Pittsburgh Magazine exposé, which can be viewed here.

In the piece, Jerry talks about some of his most memorable moments working in television production in Pittsburgh over the years, including an emotional interview with Jimmy Stewart, the opportunity to work with Kermit the Frog and what Mr. Rogers was like in real life. Currently, Jerry continues to produce personal and professional work for Strip District institutions, notably with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. You can view a sampling of Jerry’s catalogue below, and more on his YouTube channel.

Thanks for holding down the fort, Jerry!
