Old Is New: Zerrer’s Antiques In The Strip

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

Everything old is new again. Last year The Strip District welcomed  the return of Zerrer’s Antiques at 2703 Penn Avenue. Described as “an eclectic blend of furniture, smalls, artwork, glassware, decorative items and architectural pieces,”  Zerrer’s is sure to have something special for your loft or apartment. Vintage tin signs?  They’ve got ‘em.  Old postcards? You’ll find them here. How about an antique Victrola for playing those 78s? Not a problem. Stop in to meet John and Marla Zerrer. They will help you find the unusual and unique.

While you’re there, check out the works and works in progress of artist Michael Lotenero. Michael’s studio is in the forward space of this 19th Century  storefront. Huge paintings adorn the walls and line the floors. Time it right, and you may get to see Lotenero at work.

Getting Around: Pittsburgh T, Downtown Buses, etc.

Monday, February 24th, 2014

We love living in the urban center of Pittsburgh. The Cork Factory – in the Strip District – is within walking distance of Pittsburgh’s downtown, where many residents work, and can access other parts of our great city. It’s exciting to see the ‘Burgh change from a drivers only town, to a place of intermodal transit. We often talk about the great Pittsburgh River Limo, which stops in our backyard, but there’s more than just a boat at your disposal.

Did you know Pittsburgh’s light rail system is free 24/7?  “The T” will take you within the downtown area and underground/underwater to the North Shore.

Downtown bus service also is free between 4am and 7pm.   The free fare zone covers Pittsburgh’s “The Golden Triangle”  which runs between the  Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers from the Point up to Ross Street, Penn Station and Liberty Avenue at 11th Street.

These tips and more can be found in the Official Visitors Guide to Pittsburgh, distributed by Visit Pittsburgh. Residents, ask your concierge for a copy.

Also, in line with transit discussions, Pittsburgh Business Times is asking residents to give their two-cents on smartphone-based ride services, such as Uber and Lyft. Enter the conversation here.

Pittsburgh Public Market Reopening (1/31)

Friday, January 31st, 2014

Join Pittsburgh Public Market in celebrating its grand reopening this weekend, three days packed with live music, food tastings, cooking demos, fashions, readings, films, workshops and family activities. The indoor market moved into a 20,000 square foot building the corner of 24th Street and Penn Avenue in October after three years of operating in the old produce terminal building, a Strip District landmark with an uncertain future.

The bright new facility offers room for growth, with plenty of space for new vendors, classes and events. Located just one block behind Lot 24, the Pittsburgh Public Market is open Wednesdays through Sundays, providing fresh made foods, gourmet coffee, bakery and deli items, locally grown produce, wine and craft beer as well as jewelry, art, soaps, woodwork, specialty clothing and more. It’s an exciting place to visit any time but this weekend, the joint will be jumping.
